Campaign Components
While the activities of the campaign mainly target youths aged 13
to 24, the awareness generated by these activities are directed
at the community at large. Hence the campaign has 4 components (4Cs):
Celebration
of Youth Day
Community
Awareness Programme
Community
Involvement & Fund Raising Programme
Character
Building Programme
2.1 A Youth Day Celebration
Date: 4 July 2004
The celebration comprises a competitive quarter marathon, a community
run, a concert and a post-race carnival. The event has been held
annually since 2001 on the Sunday of the National Youth Day weekend
and it brings together youths from diverse backgrounds in a spirit
of friendship, co-operation and unity.
2.2 A Community Awareness
Programme
The target audience for the Community Awareness Programme will be
students, youths from welfare organisations, their teachers and
parents and youths. To get the anti-delinquency and positive messages
to the youths, medium such as music, dance and drama will be used
while educational material on topical youth issues will be provided
to the adults. It is hoped that these would create a more supportive
society for our young people to mature.
2.3 Community Involvement
It is hoped that the campaign would be an excellent vehicle to garner
support from corporations, schools, community clubs and other organisations.
Hence, increasing Community Involvement. The purpose is to harness
community support for the anti juvenile delinquency cause. Support
could come in the form of sponsorship or participating and/or volunteering
in our campaign. Such support would signal to the youths that our
society wishes them well and are proud of their positive actions.
2.4 Character Building Programme
for Youths-At-Risk
Youths-at-risk under supervision at welfare agencies will be prepared
for the competitive run. The training routine of 3 runs a week begins
4 months before the race and would help instil discipline, perseverance
and mental strength. Regular and rigorous exercise will help to
develop self-esteem, perseverance and discipline among our troubled
young people who have difficulty viewing themselves positively.
As they make progress, they will become stronger, physically and
mentally.
Thus, being a member of an athletic team will help meet the youths'
need for recognition, excitement and belonging offering them an
alternative to street gangs and other negative influences.
