MILK-Timor Leste Appeal

Thank you for supporting the Timor Leste Appeal. The Audited Accounts of the Appeal can be found HERE.

On 27 May 2006, Timor Leste’s capital Dili erupted in violence as ethnic gangs from different parts of the country battled in the streets. Houses and cars were set alight and thousands of people fled for safety. The unrest started in April 2006 and chaos continued for weeks after that till the recent resignation of its Prime Minister Alkatiri on 26 June 2006. It has left more than 140,000 people displaced and struggling for survival. As always, those who suffer most are the innocent – women and children who have been subjected to the daily trauma of violence and lack of food and shelter.

MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) Fund is launching a public appeal to help the people of Timor Leste impacted by the violent uprising. 100% funds raised by the MILK–Timor Leste Appeal will be directed to The Alola Foundation, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of women and children in Timor Leste, and an active partner of MILK. The funds will go towards immediate humanitarian needs such as food and other relief items. Any surplus in funds will be channeled towards Alola’s ongoing programmes to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

MILK has been supporting programmes aimed at reducing high maternal and infant mortality rates, healthcare and education in Timor Leste.

“Because of the unrest many Timorese have been left desperate and displaced. Your donations will go directly towards the immediate, urgent needs of those struggling for survival. Please help by giving generously.” said Mr Stanley Tan, Vice-President of MILK Fund.

MILK is supported by Singapore Petroleum Company (SPC), SMRT Corporation Limited (SMRT), Delifrance and Class95. SPC, SMRT and Delifrance appeal donation tins can be found at the 39 SPC outlets, 51 MRT stations and 51 Delifrance outlets throughout Singapore.

The MILK–Timor Leste appeal to the public for donations will be solicited till 26 July 2006. MILK hopes to engage more partners to act as collection agents for the appeal and rally support for the people in Timor Leste.

MILK’s presence in Timor Leste

Maternity Packs Project: Many Timorese women feel shame about their inability to provide their new-borns with appropriate clothing, thus are reluctant to give birth in health facilities (assisted by skilled birth attendants), resulting in one of the highest infant and child mortality rates in the world. In an effort to reduce these alarmingly high rates, maternity packs, including the 20,000 pieces of baby cloths and blankets donated by MILK, have been distributed to the women giving birth at Dili and Baucau hospitals. The packs include health promotion materials which outline positive health practices critical to the good health and survival of both mother and child. An important offshoot of the Maternity Packs project is the employment opportunities it offers to local women who are employed to produce some of the items e.g. washable napkins and wrap.

Clinic Café Timor (CCT): Clinic Café Timor (CCT) is a free primary health programme within the coffee farmers’ cooperative, the Cooperative Café Timor (CCT), and exists to offer health services to coffee growers and their families in remote mountainous areas, who otherwise, might remain poorly serviced. MILK constructed a primary health care clinic which is supported with mobile services from CCT’s Dili clinic. MILK also sponsored 100 “Rapid” HIV test kits for the Dili based HIV/STI service which is one of the two such clinics in Timor Leste. Additionally, MILK funds the training of people who work on rural maternal and child health projects and nurses.
